Basic Hat Pattern using DK weight yarn
Size: Womens - Circ 23cm, Height 20cm, Mens - Circ 25cm, Height 22cm. Gauge 22 sts = 20cm
INSTRUCTIONS WORKING FLAT & IN THE ROUND
Cast on 100 (110) sts using 4mm needles or 3.75mm if wanting tighter rib. If working in the round, join work being careful not to twist stitches. Place a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round.
Brim - Work K1, P1, ribbing for 5cm.
Body - Work in stocking stitch (flat - knit 1 row, purl 1 row / In the round - knit all rounds) until body of hat measures 14 (15) cm from cast on edge or 18 (19) cm for folding brim.
Shape Crown
Row or Rnd 1 (RS): *K8 (9) , k2tog,PM (place stitch marker); rep from * to end. 10 sts dec'd.
Row 2 (working flat): Purl, Rnd 2 (in the round): Knit
Row or Rnd 3: *Knit to 2 sts before marker, K2tog; rep from * to end. 10 sts dec'd.
Repeat rows/rnds 2 and 3 until 30 sts remain.
Next Row (working flat): P2tog, P1; rep from * to end (20 sts) Next Rnd (in the round): K1, K2tog; rep from * to end. (20 sts)
Last Row/Rnd: K2tog; rep from * to end. (10sts)
Cut yarn and thread through remaining sts and tighten off, Sew side seam and weave in ends.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR DIFFERENT YARN WEIGHTS
Use the basic pattern, just change needle size and number of stitches to cast on.
Cast on required number of stitches and then follow the basic pattern for brim and hat body. Start the 1st row / rnd of crown using instructions for each yarn type.
ARAN
- Gauge 18 sts = 10cm.
- Needles for rib = 4.5mm
- Needles for main body = 5mm
- Cast on 80 (86) sts
- Mans size only - after rib, decrease to 85 sts.
- Crown starting with Mens - K15, k2tog x 5. Both sizes, row /rnd 1 K6, K2tog, pm.
CHUNKY
- Gauge 16 sts = 10cm.
- Needles for rib = 5.5mm
- Needles for main body = 6mm
- Cast on 70 (76) sts
- Mans size only - after rib, decrease to 75 sts.
- Crown starting with Mens - K13, k2tog x 5. Both sizes, row /rnd 1 K5, K2tog, pm.
SUPER CHUNKY
- Gauge 9 sts = 10cm.
- Needles for rib = 9mm.
- Needles for main body = 10mm
- Cast on 40 (44) sts
- Crown starting with row /rnd 1 K2, K2tog, pm.
